FELIPE ARTEAGA

Felipe Arteaga (*1989, Columbia) currently living in Bern.

Sound artist and performer. Metaphorical transformations of extra-musical contents and models are a constant in his work: an inter medial friction may be associated with these transformations.
Alongside conceptual questions, however, there is always a clear commitment to the sensual in sound - to all that can only be experienced by hearing, performing or showing.
Undertaken studies in Autonomous University of Bucaramanga, Bern University of the arts, Berlin University of the arts.

ANAÏS BALMÓN

Anaïs Balmón (*1992, Geneva, CH) - also known by her artist name Gouaille - lives and works in Bern, CH. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the HEAD – Geneva in 2020. In june she will get her master degree from the Master of Contemporary Arts Practice at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Starting from a sensation, an emotion or an experience, she works with voice, field recordings and writing which she transposes into sound and spatial installations, containing objects or visual elements. She uses the space to bring the audience present in the room to another space, which could be from a particular interior. In this liminal, chaotic or mental space, there is always an explicit or underlying movement.

In her Master’s thesis, she worked with the subject of anxiety using descriptions of recordings she made with a hydrophone, and a transcript of a hypnosis therapy, mixing the two subjects, taking the reader in a noisy inner underwater world.

Her work has been presented amongst others in: Guérir avec Gerrie art residency (2023), Dampfzentrale Bern (2022), ToBE Gallery Bern (2022), Collège Calvin Geneva (permanent installation).

Take it for granted. Take it literary. Take it as you like. Like it or not. Like this or that. Like a pebble.

The Installation follow the flow scroll down and roll on as well as the literary work Die eher Rollenden are two pieces out of the series of works entitled Kiesel Kiesel Kiesel, whose can be understood individually as well as interlocking. Kiesel Kiesel Kiesel finds expression in the media of photography, moving image, performance, literature and installations. In this series, I seek analogies between pebbles and people. With the temporality of the counterpart diametrically opposed, creating an insurmountable paradox. In failure, however, lies a movement: a picking up, a pausing, a moving on, an editing, a dropping, a continuing, a repetition, like a rolling.

He is currently studying a Master's degree in Contemporary Arts Practice at the same university. Previously, she graduated from the University of Bern with a degree in Spanish and French Literature and Linguistics.

artist statement

Luz González treats sound as a physical phenomenon that is experienced with the whole body and not only with the ears. Sound processing becomes the very material of an aesthetic that moves away from purism and focuses on transformation. The relationship between the sound body, the architectural body and the perceiving body is fundamental in this process.

In this line of bodily perception, the topics of deconstruction and hybridization occupy a central place.

Zones limitrophes starts from the desire to create a common language beyond a certain aesthetic line or tradition, as well as from the conviction that musical understanding goes beyond these categories. In this project Luz González (live electronic) and Rebeca Minten (bass clarinet) provoke and support each other in equal parts.

As fillas de Lorca is a solo proposal by Luz González (live electronics, voice) a continuously changing composition in which she explores sonority and develops a language between the visceral and the delicate.

Title performance: Sunny times
Title of writings and drawings: Bum thoughts
Title created objects: catching dreams
Title found/ gifted objects: travel artefacts

The work I am presenting is all an, in-between space, that is inspired from traveling and living with my car, first Piet and then Gerrie. Where I searched for things I thought you would never be able to find.

The work is contemplating these attempts to something bigger, something more. Grasping the moments where you for a short second think you have “it” and the many times you think you will never.

It is the result of a two year long process; reflecting on freedom, independence, romanticizing, your role in society and the inner need for adventure.

Containing writings, found/ gifted objects, created objects, drawings and a long durational performance.

artist statement

Through three sound installations, the artist creates moments of intimacy that deal with the physical perception of sound. The installation zitternd, wankend (trembling, swaying) is based on the feeling of an inner shock and combines the visual aspect of sound with the acousitc level. I want you to breathe me in, let me be your air consists of two sound sources: one’s own breath, amplified by earplugs, and the breath played back through headphones.
The touch of your hand deals with situations of unintentional intimacy by focusing on the tactile perception of sound.

Tisser des cendres is a dreamlike journey in which several times and several voices intertwine. The ashes - both traces and remains of a disappearance - allowed me to explore the motifs of archive, incineration and fire. Following the trail of a memory or a delirium, the story naviguates in search of reconciliation’s points taking place between resistance and acceptance. The installation Mailles après mailles results of my desire to accompany the writing with a gesture : the one of crocheting spiderwebs. For me, webs became connectors as well as openings to others stories. My thesis, Fredonner la nuit, tries to think the losses we carry with us. I propose a constant back-and-forth through a multitude of words, in the form of melodies or quotes, which I link together. These three projects are interwoven around my reflections on time, loss and memory, and the sensitive ways of approaching them.

MANU MEIER

Manu Meier (*1984, Baden, CH) lives and works in Basel, CH. After her apprenticeship as a media designer in 2005 and the preliminary course at the F+F school of art and design in Zurich Altstetten in 2009, she moved to Basel in 2011 for the Bachelor of Arts as a process designer at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW. During her Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice in the field of Sound Arts at the Bern Academy of Arts, she did an internship as a sound designer at Idee und Klang in Basel.

In her artistic practice she deals with the acoustic of our everyday environment. The characteristic, rather inconspicuous sound signature of places and circumstances is investigated, analyzed and reinterpreted compositionally. She works mainly in the field of sound ecology with field and soundscape recordings from urban environments and biodiversity. In her projects she explores the spatial dimension of sound. From this emerge multi-channel compositions, which are shown as individual pieces, or as sculptural, interactive or multi-media installations. Her works were shown in 2022 at Ars Electronica in Linz (A), at Open Garden in Salzburg (A), as well as in 2020 as part of the Art Week for Climate Protection at GEDOK in Karlsruhe (D) and in 2015 during the ZeitRäume Festival in Basel (CH). Her latest works will be showed in 2023 at the Kunsthaus Pasquart in Biel (CH) and at the Sonic Matter Festival in Zurich (CH).

She is also active in project management, exhibition and event organization, as well as in the collective collaboration of different cultural projects. The motivation is also here to shape, animate, move, or re-experience space.

Since 2023 she is a co-founder and active member of the board of the Swiss Society for Acoustic Ecology (SSAE).

With her work, she wants to make a statement for a more conscious listening culture. In her prospective work, her focus is on urban acoustics in the fields of digitalization, society, technology and biodiversity. Through a transdisciplinary work from these fields, she wants to contribute to the shaping of the future soundscape.

GEMMA RAGUÉS PUJOL

Gemma Ragués Pujol (*1993) is a composer, writer and performer specialized in contemporary and experimental music.

Her pieces find its ground in the acoustic palette and its root in deep conceptual and poetic ideas. Works often in the crossovers between voice and electronics, physical presence and performance. She uses text and poetry to build up stories and dramaturgies full of onirism and humour.

She has performed alone in big venues like la Biennale di Venezia Musica 2022, Tafelhalle Nürnberg and her works have been premiered by ensembles such as Neue Vocalsolisten, VORTEX Ensemble, the Biel Symphony Orchestra, NEC or NEKO3, beyond others, in festivals such as Venice Biennale, ECLAT, Jardins Musicaux or Musikfestival Bern.

NERA SIRONA

STELLA SPINEDI

Stella Rosangela Kiyomi Spinedi (she/her) is swiss, born in Mendrisio in 1999.

A state of tension and potential (action) triggers her artistic process which takes the impulse of a challenge, that through bodily confrontation with the materials leads to the concretization of something that first seems undoable and slowly gets shape.

Stella mainly builds objects or installations and creates performances where the functional serves the empathic body to shape an experience.

She gets inputs from many different fields including her family story and the tradition of the carpentry profession; but also from physical training, anger, power dynamics, and politics.

Her position is to use the materiality of the object, its honesty and its sensuality.

She doesn’t care to satisfy the spectator’s needs and sees the over-interpretation of the work as an inadequate search for comfort.

Among other venues, she exhibited her works and showed her performances in group exhibitions in Kunsthalle Bern, EAC Les Halles, Kunsthaus Langenthal, EGG space (solo), and Die Alte Schreinenrei Bern.

She is the founder and an active member of CALCI collective.

VALESKA MARINA STACH

it’s easy to stare into a fire, 2023

Generative, interactive audiovisual installation for eight speakers, four projectors, and one hallway.
Visuals and Projections, Michael Bernauer

Imagine a camping fire. It’s easy to stare into it and watch it burn down. Maybe you put some logs in from time to time. It’s soothing, relaxing, and almost meditative to lose yourself in thoughts while observing the process. Something about the burning wood keeps you entertained, and yet there is nothing crazy and unexpected about to happen. Of course, the little crackles may vary in intensity, but the slightly bigger popping sound from 5 minutes ago was definitely the highlight of the show. Anyways, you don’t stare into it because you’re about the experience the most exciting thing in your life... It’s just... nice.

The inspiration for this audiovisual installation comes exactly from a phenomenon like fire. Nevertheless, there are many others, for example, rain. What connects them are certain qualities of chaos, and randomness but also recognizable patterns, repetitions, and similarities, which allow us to feel entertained in a very unconventional way.

This work is my attempt to translate these qualities into an interactive artistic experience.

With the rising of the seas and winds we remember all places are temporary, 2023
Verschiedene Materialen
Dimension variabel

With the rising of the seas and winds
we remember all places are temporary
civilizations come and go like everything
and the people to come
name different the land they walk
ruins of a world they don’t know
in those new worlds our words will be forgotten
and they will not remember (if we are remembered at all)
how we once tried to hold the whole world in our hands
in their world nobody owns the land

MELISSA ZOE CASTELLETTI

Melissa’s artistic approach delves into the realm of the inner quest, providing a gateway to explore collective experiences and establish a common ground between the artist and the audience. Through diverse mediums such as installations, soundscapes, texts and drawings, she researches themes such as intimacy and safety.

Her works have been presented in Switzerland (Dampfzentrale, Walcheturm, Prozess, etc.), Germany (ZKM, Anachronism, Madame Claude), Spain (MUNCYT, Sin Sal) and Northern Ireland (Sonorities Festival Belfast).

Sontag, Susan. Gegen Interpretation (Mark W. Rien, Übersetz.). 1966 / Wittgenstein, Ludwig. Philosophische Untersuchungen. 1953

With the rising of the seas and winds we remember all places are temporary, 2023
Verschiedene Materialen
Dimension variabel

With the rising of the seas and winds
we remember all places are temporary
civilizations come and go like everything
and the people to come
name different the land they walk
ruins of a world they don’t know
in those new worlds our words will be forgotten
and they will not remember (if we are remembered at all)
how we once tried to hold the whole world in our hands
in their world nobody owns the land
